Taking inspiration from the local culture, marine life, and the unique flora of Hawaii, The Way Follows Nature (2021) is a limited-edition collection of designs on face masks created by artist Ai Weiwei exclusively for Hawaii Contemporary to benefit the forthcoming Hawaii Triennial 2022 (HT22). The designs reflect upon our natural environment in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, a highly charged time of pause and social change.
About Ai Weiwei:
Ai Weiwei is a celebrated contemporary artist and prominent human rights activist. He is an idealist who can tackle the most brutal reality. For some, this would be a paradox. But for Ai, belief in the power of art to change real-life conditions drives his work as an artist, filmmaker, blogger, dissident and most recently, as a refugee crises humanitarian. Ai was born in Beijing in 1957 and currently lives and works in Berlin. He is the recipient of the 2015 Ambassador of Conscience Award from Amnesty International. Ais most recent film Vivos premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival in the Documentary Premieres section.
