A beautiful piece of American Art History! 1905 original pastel painting by Charles Fromuth (1858-1937) of fishing and sardine boats docked in Concarneau Harbor in Pennsylvania. Signed "Fromuth", dated 1905, and stamped with the artist's studio mark. In very good condition- original frame (photographed with and without the frame glass). From the private collection of a San Francisco Presidio Heights family estate. Very rare to find original works by this artist! Charles Fromuth was a distinguished American painter who received many accolades and featured in prominent national and international art exhibitions. at the height of his painting career in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, the distinctive styles of impressionism were taking hold, and modernism was emerging. Born into humble beginnings in Philadelphia, Fromuth would later study with Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy. After relocating to Brittany, Fromuth discovered his muse- the Concarneau Harbor. The boats and reflections entranced him, and became the subject of his most sought after works. In 1895 all six charcoals he submitted of the Harbor of Concarneau were accepted for exhibition by the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris at the Champs de Mars Salon, and given a coveted place "on the line" in the exhibition. In 1896 Fromuth was elected an associate member of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and that same year received an invitation to exhibit at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1897 he exhibited at the Cincinnati Museum Association, and was represented in the exhibition of the Society of American Artists in New York. At the International Kunstaustellung in Munich he won a gold medal, exhibited at the St. Louis Exposition and the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. In 1905 Fromuth went on to win the gold medal at the International Exhibition in St. Louis (the same year he completed this painting!)
