This auction lot is for a GERMAN VOLKSMARCH MEDAL - #2 This medal is from the 1990 (?) Nidernhausen March. Note: the 1990 date appears on the medal makers mark on the verso - so we are assuming this medal was struck in that year. There is an identical medal elsewhere in this auction. Volksmarching (from German "Volksmarsch", people's march) is a form of non-competitive fitness walking that developed in Europe in the mid-late 1960s. By 1968, the International Federation of Popular Sports (better known as the "IVV") was formed by Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. A volksmarch is essentially a more formalized version of a hike, in which participants check in at the start and proceed along a prescribed route—usually ten kilometers, or 6.2 miles. This medal is from the estate of a life-long military family who were stationed for many years in German. See photos for size and details.
