Before becoming the fashion world’s favorite artist, Donald Robertson was a middle-aged suburban dad with a nine-to-five job, a daily commute from Westchester to N.Y.C., and little interest in social media. But he also had a compulsive drawing habit and an assistant who, in 2012, set him up with an Instagram account—and suddenly a new art star had arrived. Online, he is @drawbertson, and his witty, almost cartoonlike depictions of everyone from Anna Wintour to Kanye West to Karl Lagerfeld have won him more than 140,000 followers, collaborations with J. Crew, Smashbox, and Bergdorf Goodman (to name a few), and the kind of multi-platform career usually mastered by the likes of Beyoncé—who’s a fan, by the way. In May, when she uploaded a photo of herself holding a custom-made Drawbertson handbag, “I nearly fell over,” he says. “Beyoncé holding that up—it’s like a halo over everything else.” Robertson, now 53, is most often compared to Andy Warhol, though he’d prefer Pharrell Williams—everything infused with warmth and joy. He never takes a day off, never runs out of ideas, Donald ‘Drawbertson’ Robertson, the artist and creator of one of the six bespoke Bazaar Art supplement covers, has teamed up with the designer Kara Ross to create a limited-edition collection of handbags. Suggested Retail is $395 To celebrate the collaboration, Robertson has also created an installation for the windows of the Kara Ross store. Using his signature collage work and Ross’ designs, Robertson has made a whimsical line-up of models wearing dresses made contrastingly from gaffer tape and luxury handbags.
