ITEM: Original Watercolor Painting MEDIUM: Watercolor and pencil on Paper DIMENSIONS: 15 X 20 inches CIRCA: June, 1934. ATTRIBUTION: Frank C. Schlitzer. DESCRIPTION: The extremely fine, original watercolor painting is by American artist and illustrator, Frank C. Schlitzer. The narrative painting depicts Christ carrying the cross on the road to Calvary. A swooning Mary is posed at the down right corner of the scene. Christ appears to be Blessing a woman in distress. The many characters in this narrative have been posed, and artfully rendered in various states of distress, and are depicted wearing red, blue, green, purple and brown, which add considerably to the drama of the scene, a stone wall with ascending stairs, and a monumental archway through the wall, backdrop the scene. The painting retains the original period frame and should not be separated from it. CONDITION/RECOMMENDATIONS: This is an important work of art and should be on a priority list for conservation. It should be professionally removed from the frame and housed using archival backing materials.
