A great addition to anyone's Carnival collection - Print from Harper's Weekly, 29 March 1873 entitled "Mardi Gras in New Orleans - Grand Tableau of the Mistick Krewe". This was probably the most famous tableau/parade in Mardi Gras history - their theme was "Missing Links to Darwin's Origin of Species" and depicted General Grant as a Tobacco Bug, Henry Clay Warmouth as a snake, and Lt. Gov C.C. Antoine as a monkey. This was a bold display of political commentary and costume artistry and the first time a krewe dared to not maintain political neutrality in their presentation. It set the tone for the satire that often pervades Carnival today. Also, this was the first time the tableau costumes were made in New Orleans instead of Paris. A great piece of Carnival history in excellent condition. 23.5" across, 20" tall.
