A beautiful large original oil painting by Emile Albert Gruppe (1896-1978). A tranquil scene of a sailboat docked in a calm harbor port (potentially Gloucester Massachusetts). Everything in the painting feels quiet and calm, as if it's still very early and the busy dock work has not yet begun. When you look into the painting, you feel as if you are transported back decades in time, walking along a New England harbor boardwalk in the early hours just after dawn, smelling the salt of the sea as you inhale the brisk air, and looking up at a beautiful sailboat docked nearby.. the morning light increasingly illuminating the partly cloudy skies, slowly revealing faint patches of blue sky, and casting dark shadows along the glass-like water. Wonderful details. This painting is in very good condition. Frame measures approximately 42" wide and 49.5" tall, and the canvas measures approximately 32" wide and 40" tall. From the private collection of a San Francisco Presidio Heights family estate. Other original Gruppe paintings of port scenes and sailboats (of comparable quality and size) have consistently sold at auction (between 2018-2020) ranging from $8,000 to $13,000. Emile Albert Gruppe was an American painter, known for his depictions of the autumnal and wintry landscapes of New England, as well as maritime port scenes and sailing ships. The artist’s work is associated with impressionist and post-impressionist styles. Born in 1896 in Rochester, New York, Gruppe spent his youth in the Netherlands, studying art under his renowned painter father Charles P. Gruppe (1860-1940), and returning to the United States at the onset of World War I. He studied painting at the National Academy in New York and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, France. Gruppe would eventually move to Gloucester, MA, where he would remain until his death in 1978.
