This massive carved mask is from the Senufo tribe (Ivory Coast) - early 20th century. Termed a "Fire Spitter" mask - usually owned by the Poro Society - they wear them in rituals to honor deceased ancestors and ward off evil spirits. Obtained from the McNemar Gallery of African Art in New York City between 1958-1960. Valued in 1960 at $650.00 - a fair amount of money at the time. At least 3 feet tall.
