These three engravings are quite interesting - all executed by noted French engraver Auguste de S'Aubin, born 1736 in Paris, died 1807. He was active as an engraver from 1752 until 1800. These are not prints - they are original hand colored engravings, in French, that I believe are an allegory for the French Revolution, so this would date them to the early 1790's. Each engraving shows a different scene of French children playing around - one in a churchyard, another amidst tomb builders/monument makers, and another outside a church. The first is called "La Toupie" or THE TOP and shows boys playing with a top in a churchyard - the next "Le Coupe-Tete" or I cut off his head obliquely refers to the guillotine. The last "La Sortie du college" or Leaving the college refers the toe French aristocrats fleeing the country. August du S'Aubin was the official engraver for the Royal Library and came from a long line of distinguished French designers and engravers. Framed, these measure 9" x 11.5" each. Antique condition.
