Our clients were long time art collectors and they amassed an important collection of etchings and lithographs by many very well-known artists. We have done some research on this etching. It was obtained in the 70's at the Upstairs Gallery in California, where many of their other pieces came from. Their catalog reference "Guerin 66/III" is on the reverse. This refers to an etching done from the original copperplate shortly after the original painting was done in 1881 - this etching was done in 1893. One of Manet's most important works, Spring (or Jeanne, as it is sometimes called) was part of an unfinished series using beautiful women to portray the Seasons of the Year. Only Autumn and Spring were ever actually done. This was the first piece of art to ever be printed in color. The original painting is now in the J. Paul Getty museum - it was purchased by them in 2014 for 65 million dollars. This pen and wash etching, done in 1893 from the original copper plate, has a current value of well over $1,000, based on actual sold examples we found online. Professionally framed to set off the work. A respected local appraiser has supplied a full written appraisal (comes with the piece) that states insurance replacement value at that time was $7,000.
