Original Oil Painting by Jane Freeman (1871-1963), portrait of an elegant young woman (Consuelo Cloos) in a formal black gown with veil, featuring pink rose and green leaf details, and holding a rolled sheet of music. Consuelo Cloos is a noted poet and surrealist painter of the 20th century, with some of her poetry set to music by Alan Hovhaness. She was also the widow of Max Pantelieff, who was the director of the Russian Grand Opera Company, which brought Russian opera to the United States of America for the first time in the 1920s. Beautiful painting in excellent condition, and quality framing. Signed by the artist, including '40 (indicating the painting was completed in 1940). Titled "Consuelo Cloos". The frame measures approximately 39" wide and 45.5" tall, with the canvas measuring approximately 32.5" wide and 38" tall. Portraits of similar size and quality by Freeman have sold at recent auctions in the range of $1,900-2,200. From the private collection of a San Francisco Presidio Heights family estate. Jane Freeman is known for portrait, genre, figure, landscape, and still life painting (but most notably for her portrait painting). She was born in England in 1871, and was brought to the United States by her mother three years later. She began her career in the art world at a young age, first as a model herself for numerous well-known portrait painters, and later as an illustrator for magazines such as the Delineator. She quickly began to tackle the nuanced art of portrait painting herself. Her American tutors included William N. Chas, Charle Hawthorne, Frank Vincent Dumond, George E. Brown, and Frank Fairbanks. In Paris, she studied with Olga de Boznanska, the noted Polish portrait painter Andre L'Hote, and attended the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. Jane Freeman spent most of her life in New York City, living at Carnegie Hall, Beaux Arts Studios, and the Van Dyke Studios on 7th Avenue. She spent her summers actively painting in the art colonies of Provincetown and Rockport. She died on September 23, 1963, at the age of 93.
