This massive carved mask is from the Senufo tribe (Ivory Coast) - early 20th century. Termed a "Fire Spitter" mask - usually owned by the Poro Society - they wear them in rituals to honor deceased ancestors and ward off evil spirits. Obtained from the McNemar Gallery of African Art in New York City between 1958-1960. Valued in 1960 at $650.00 - a fair amount of money at the time. At least 3 feet tall. 718 / 838 -

Came from the Republic of Upper Volta in 1961 and is described as a vertical structure with two rounded areas alternating from the bottom with two square areas, terminating in a series of short residual horns. There is an over all incised motif around which a pattern of color has been imposed. This represents butterflies and owls among other mythological figures, scared to the Bobo people. Carved vertically along the center of the mask is a structure representing the crocodiles, whose forefeet serve as "eyes" for the lower mask. Good condition. 775 / 838 sold -

Horses are powerful and expensive to keep - the enhance their Owner's prestige and by extension, that of the Diviner who owns figures of them.
