Born in a jewish family in Russia, Marc Chagall (1887-1985), traveled all over Europe, before becoming a french citizen, and lived in Paris most of his time, ( he spent 7 years in New York city). He created cathedral windows, in France, in Switzerland, in Israel, for the United Nation, the Art Institute of Chicago and even did a large scale painting for part of the ceiling in the Paris Opera! In 1962, Chagall was commissioned by Sir Henry and Lady d'Avigdor-Goldsmid to create 12 windows in the synagogue at the Hadassah - Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem in tribute to their 21 year daughter who dies tragically in a sailing accident. Chagall 's work, represent the 12 gates through which prayers of individual who worship there, have direct access to heaven.
